Installing CamDRAW in CorelDRAW: A Step-by-Step Guide

CamDRAW installs into CorelDRAW as an add-on. Once it is in place it appears in the Tools menu and opens as a docker on the right-hand side of the interface, next to the ones CorelDRAW already has. The whole process takes about two minutes.

This guide covers the installation itself, what to do when several CorelDRAW versions are present, and the one problem that accounts for most support requests.

Before you start

Check three things.

Your CorelDRAW version is supported. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X7 and later, Technical Suite, Standard, Essentials, Home & Student and the Special Editions bundled with hardware are all covered, in 32 and 64-bit. The specifications page lists the exact releases for each edition.

Your system meets the requirements. Windows 11, 10, 8.1 or 7, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 or higher, and at least 4 GB of RAM.

You have an internet connection available. It is needed once, to activate the trial or a licence key. After activation CamDRAW runs without one.

Installing CamDRAW

1. Download the setup. It is an EXE file. If you downloaded a ZIP archive, unpack it first, because installers do not run reliably from inside an archive.

2. Close CorelDRAW. The installer writes into CorelDRAW's add-on directory, and that fails while the program is running. This is the most common reason an installation appears to succeed but changes nothing.

3. Run the setup as administrator. Right-click the file and choose Run as administrator. Writing into the Program Files directory requires it.

4. Select the CorelDRAW version. The installer detects every CorelDRAW installation on the machine and lists them. Choose the one you want to work in. The 32 or 64-bit variant and the installation directory are set automatically once you select the product, so there is nothing to configure by hand.

5. Accept the licence terms by ticking the checkbox.

6. Click Install, then close the setup program when it finishes.

7. Open CorelDRAW and go to the Tools menu. CamDRAW is listed at the bottom. Click it.

8. Adjust the docker width. CamDRAW opens on the right-hand side under Add-ons. Drag its left edge until the controls sit comfortably. The docker is laid out as four collapsible sections stacked from top to bottom, and the workflow follows that order: Profile, Workpiece, Toolpaths, NC program. Click a section header to expand or collapse it. Above them, next to the CamDRAW logo at the very top, sits a gear icon that opens the settings window.

On a first installation the trial version activates automatically when the plugin starts, so you can begin immediately.

When CamDRAW does not appear under Tools

This is the single most frequent installation problem, and it is almost never a failed installation.

CorelDRAW caches its workspace, and a workspace that was saved before the plugin existed does not know about it. The plugin is installed; CorelDRAW is simply showing you an old menu.

The fix takes ten seconds:

1. Close CorelDRAW completely.

2. Start CorelDRAW again and hold the F8 key while it loads.

3. A prompt appears offering to reset the workspace. Confirm it.

4. CamDRAW now appears under Tools.

Try this before uninstalling anything. If the entry is still missing afterwards, check that you installed into the CorelDRAW version you are actually opening, which is easy to get wrong when several are present on the same machine.

Installing into several CorelDRAW versions

The installer writes into one CorelDRAW product at a time. If you run more than one version and want CamDRAW available in each, run the setup once per version and select a different product each time.

This is worth doing deliberately rather than by accident. A common situation is having an older CorelDRAW that a machine supplier bundled alongside a newer one you bought yourself. Installing into the wrong one leaves you looking for a menu entry that was never added there.

Where CamDRAW is installed

Two locations matter, and knowing them saves time later.

The program files sit in CorelDRAW's add-on directory. For 32-bit installations that is C:\Program Files (x86)\Corel\<CorelDRAW version>\Programs\Addons\CamDRAW 4, and for 64-bit it is C:\Program Files\Corel\<CorelDRAW version>\Programs64\Addons\CamDRAW 4. The exact CorelDRAW version name forms part of the path, which is why the installer asks you to pick a product rather than browse to a folder.

Your settings are kept separately, at C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\CamDRAW 4. AppData is hidden by default in Windows Explorer, so either switch on hidden items under the View tab, or paste %AppData%\CamDRAW 4 into the Explorer address bar. This is where the application settings file, the inch and millimetre tool lists, the log file, the postprocessor files and an automatic backup live.

The separation matters for two reasons. Updates replace the program files but leave your settings untouched, so tool lists and postprocessors survive. And uninstalling removes only the add-on directory, so your configuration is still there if you reinstall later.

After installation

When CamDRAW starts for the first time it asks which CNC machine you use. Pick yours from the list if it is there. If it is not, choose G-Code (Standard) for machines without an automatic tool changer, or G-Code (Standard) - ATC for machines with one. Both are standard configurations compatible with most controllers. To change the selection later, open the Profile section at the top of the CamDRAW docker and pick a different entry from the dropdown. To load a preset that is not in the list yet, open the settings with the gear icon, go to the Profile tab, and use the import button under the profile you want to fill.

More than sixty machines and controllers are preconfigured, and the supported machines list is worth checking before you settle for a generic profile.

The plugin interface appears in the same language CorelDRAW is set to. To change it, click the gear icon at the top of the CamDRAW docker, next to the logo, and use the Language dropdown on the General tab. Click Save at the bottom of the window, then restart CorelDRAW for the change to take effect.

If something goes wrong

Work through these in order:

• CorelDRAW was open during installation. Close it and run the setup again.

• The setup was not run as administrator. Right-click, Run as administrator.

• The menu entry is missing. Restart CorelDRAW holding F8 and confirm the workspace reset.

• The plugin was installed into a different CorelDRAW version than the one you opened.

• .NET Framework 4.6 or higher is not present on the system.
